Weemala Performance Horses Faecal Egg Count Service
Studies are now showing that worming based on evidence is the most effective approach to preventing drench resistance in horses. Performing regular Faecal Egg Counts give actual evidence to the horse owner, who can than make an informed decision as to whether to worm or not and what product to use.
When to test & when to worm can be confusing. Weemala Performance Horses can help with recommendations and provide you with the evidence needed to formulate an effective worm management strategy.
What do I do & when do I do it? - The Basics
September to November
The warmer temperatures during these months provide optimum conditions for Strongyle egg laying activity. WPH recommend a FEC be undertaken on all horses about 1 month into the spring season.
December to February
Monitor high-shedding horses with FEC every 8-12 weeks. If significant rainfall and springlike conditions it can be useful to undertake a FEC on all horses.
March to May
The cooling weather at this time of year is unfavourable to Strongyles but is the best time to target those parasites not detectable by FEC like Bot Fly Larvae, small encysted Strongyles and Tapeworm. Now is the time to drench those horses that have a history of low egg counts as they may only need to be treated once a year. Horses classed as high shedders should continue to be monitored.
June to August
Winter in most parts of Australia is sufficiently cold enough to limit Strongyle egg production. WPH recommend giving yourselves and your horses a break from FEC & deworming and get ready for Spring.
A good rule of thumb is if the grass is growing the worms will be laying!
FECRT
Faecal Egg Count Reduction Tests or Retests should be performed on those horses that return a high result to check for resistance and effectiveness of treatment. A retest sample should be collected 14 days post treatment.
Samples can be posted to us or drop off is available in Fyshwick ACT by appointment.
Please ensure you contact us prior to posting samples to ensure we are available and can expect the sample..
